Psychometric Services

My core area of expertise — instrument development, validation, and psychometric evaluation.

I've spent years working on instrument development and psychometric validation, including published work involving EFA with polychoric correlations and parallel analysis, CFA with measurement invariance testing across demographic groups, multiple imputation for missing data, and convergent/discriminant validity evaluation. If you're developing, validating, or refining a measurement instrument, this is what I'm trained to do and what I've done the most of.

Exploratory Factor Analysis (EFA)

Discovers the underlying structure of a measurement tool — which groups of questions naturally cluster together and what distinct constructs the instrument is actually measuring.

Academic ExampleYou developed a 40-item questionnaire measuring student engagement and need to determine how many distinct dimensions it captures before publication.
Applied ExampleA state child welfare agency created an intake screening tool and needs to verify what underlying constructs it actually measures before using it to inform placement decisions.

Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA)

Tests whether a measurement tool's theoretical structure holds up when applied to real data — confirming that the instrument measures what it's supposed to measure in the expected pattern.

Academic ExampleA published depression scale was developed with college students; you need to confirm that the same factor structure holds in your sample of older adults.
Applied ExampleA risk assessment instrument validated in one state is being adopted by another; CFA confirms whether it measures the same constructs in the new population before it's used for decision-making.

Measurement Invariance Testing

Tests whether a measurement tool functions the same way across different groups — ensuring that score differences between groups reflect real differences, not instrument bias. This is critical for fairness and legal defensibility.

Academic ExampleDoes a new academic resilience scale function equivalently across gender, race/ethnicity, and first-generation student status?
Applied ExampleA family court uses a parenting competency assessment; measurement invariance testing determines whether the tool scores fairly across racial and socioeconomic groups — essential for legal defensibility and equitable outcomes.

Reliability and Validity Assessment

Confirms that a tool measures what it claims to (validity) and does so consistently (reliability). Includes convergent validity (does it correlate with related measures?), discriminant validity (does it not correlate with unrelated measures?), and criterion validity (does it predict real-world outcomes?).

Academic ExampleEstablishing that a new anxiety measure produces stable scores and correlates with existing validated measures while remaining distinct from a depression measure.
Applied ExampleDemonstrating for an accreditation body that a program's client assessment tool actually captures what it's supposed to, consistently, across all program sites.

Full Scale Development

The complete process of creating a new measurement instrument from scratch — from initial item writing through pilot testing, exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis, validation, and a final publication-ready or implementation-ready report.

Academic ExampleDeveloping and validating a new measure of workplace psychological safety for publication in a peer-reviewed journal.
Applied ExampleA state agency needs a standardized instrument to assess client readiness for independent living across all regional offices, developed from scratch and validated for their specific population.
